What determines the cleaning price
Two identical symptoms can turn out to be completely different jobs. The price is mainly determined by four things:
- Where the clog is. A clog in a sink siphon can be cleared in minutes. A clog deep in the pipe or in the main line requires more time and specialized tools.
- How many points are clogged. If water is backing up in several appliances at once, the clog is in their common pipe.
- Cleaning method. A light clog can be cleared with manual tools, a severe one requires a compressor, and a pipe completely blocked with grease and sediment requires specialized high-pressure equipment.
- Difficulty of access to the pipe. If the pipe is under a floor screed and cannot be reached otherwise, it needs to be partially broken open.
Sometimes a technician will recommend a video camera inspection. The camera shows exactly where the clog is and whether the pipe is damaged. This is especially useful if the sewer clogs frequently.
Why sewers get clogged
- In the kitchen: Grease and food scraps. Hot grease cools down in the pipe, hardens, and gradually narrows it.
- In the bathroom and shower: Hair and soap scum that accumulates in the siphon and drain.
- In the toilet: Wet wipes, hygiene products, and paper towels. None of these dissolve in water, even if the packaging says otherwise.
- In old buildings: Old cast-iron pipes where sediment accumulates on the inner surface over the years.
What you can do before the technician arrives
- Try a plunger. In case of a light clog, this is often enough.
- Clean the siphon. The siphon under the sink can be opened by hand. Place a container underneath and remove the accumulated debris.
- Stop using water. If water is backing up in several places, do not use the washing machine, dishwasher, or shower until the clog is removed.
- Be careful with chemicals. Chemical agents rarely clear strong clogs and can damage old pipes. Never mix different agents together.
If the plunger and cleaning the siphon don't help, or if water is backing up in several places, call a professional. The longer water stands, the greater the risk of damage and flooding your neighbors.
How to prevent clogs
- Do not pour grease down the sink: let it cool and throw it in the trash;
- Install a mesh screen on the sink and shower drain to catch hair and debris;
- Flush only toilet paper down the toilet;
- If the sewer clogs frequently, check the pipes with a camera: the problem might be in the pipe layout or damage.
- Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to clean a toilet?
Cleaning a toilet clog costs 80₾. If the clog is beyond the toilet, in the pipe, the price depends on where the clog is located and what method is used to clean it.
Why does the sewer clog on the first floor?
In a building, wastewater from upper floors flows down through a common pipe. If the clog is in the lower part of this pipe, the water comes back up in the lowest apartment. That is why the problem often appears on the first floor, even though the cause affects the entire building entrance.
Can I use chemical agents?
They may help in mild cases, but they rarely clear strong clogs. They can damage old pipes, and mixing different agents causes the release of dangerous gas. If you have already poured chemicals in, be sure to tell the technician.
How long does cleaning take?
Cleaning one point usually ends quickly. Cleaning a common pipe, multiple points, or a manhole takes more time. The technician will give you the exact time on-site.
