Gas stove installation and repair: common problems, safety, and prices
Share
The gas stove is the most frequently used appliance in the kitchen and, at the same time, the one on which safety depends the most. In this article, you will find out why a burner won't light, why the flame goes out, what a yellow flame means, what you can do yourself, and how much gas stove installation and repair costs.
If you smell gas
- Turn off the stove knobs and the gas valve.
- Open windows and doors.
- Do not turn lights or electrical appliances on or off, and do not use fire.
- Leave the apartment and call the gas supplier's hotline or 112 from outside.
You should never look for a gas leak with a flame. Read about the detector that detects gas leaks on its own in the article "Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector: Why You Need It and Where It Should Be Installed."
1. The burner won't light
- The burner is wet. This often happens after cleaning the stove or if food spills over. Dry the burner and the cap thoroughly.
- The holes are clogged. Grease and food residues clog the burner holes. Clean the cooled-down burner.
- The cap is not sitting properly. The burner cap must sit exactly in its place; otherwise, the flame will be uneven or will not light at all.
- The electric ignition is not working. If you don't hear a clicking sound, check if the stove is plugged into a power outlet.
If the burner does not light for a long time, do not leave the knob open: turn it off, wait for the gas to dissipate, and only then try again.
2. The flame goes out when you release the knob
Many modern gas stoves have a gas control system: if the flame goes out, it automatically cuts off the gas supply. When igniting, you must hold the knob for a few seconds until the system "sees" the flame. If the flame goes out even after this, the gas control system likely needs cleaning or replacing. This is a job for a professional.
3. Yellow flame and soot
A properly functioning gas stove has a blue flame and burns evenly. A yellow, red, or "dancing" flame and soot on the bottom of cookware indicate incomplete combustion. In such cases, more carbon monoxide is released into the air.
What to do: First, clean the burner, as the cause is often just dirt. If the flame is still yellow, limit your use of the stove, ventilate the kitchen, and call a professional.
4. The oven does not turn on or bakes unevenly
Oven problems are often related to the ignition system, gas control system, thermostat, or electrical parts. These parts regulate the gas supply, so they should not be repaired independently.
Gas stove installation: what you need to know
Connecting a gas stove to the gas supply is not a job you should attempt yourself. An improperly tightened connection or an unsuitable hose is the most frequent cause of leaks. During proper installation:
- Only an undamaged hose intended for gas is used;
- The hose is not bent, stretched, or touching hot parts of the oven;
- Connections are checked for leaks after installation, for example with a soapy solution, and never with a flame;
- In the case of a built-in surface, a hole of the exact size is cut into the kitchen countertop.
If the gas stove or oven has electric ignition or electrical parts, there must be a grounded outlet nearby.

Safe use of a gas stove
Never heat a room with a gas stove. This is a common cause of carbon monoxide poisoning;
- Turn on the range hood or open a window slightly while cooking;
- Do not leave a lit gas stove unattended;
- Keep curtains, towels, and paper away from the burners;
- Install a gas and carbon monoxide detector in the kitchen.
Frequently asked questions
How much does gas stove installation cost?
Standard gas stove installation costs 45₾, and a built-in surface costs 65₾. If a hole needs to be cut in the kitchen countertop for installation, this is priced separately.
The burner clicks but won't light. What should I do?
Most often, the burner is wet, dirty, or its cap is not seated correctly. Dry it, clean it, and place the cap correctly. If that doesn't help, call a professional. If you smell gas, turn the knob off and do not attempt to ignite it.
The flame is yellow and the cookware is getting black. Is it dangerous?
A normal flame is blue. A yellow or red flame and soot indicate incomplete combustion, during which more carbon monoxide is released. Ventilate the room and have a professional check the stove.
How often should a gas hose be replaced?
The lifespan of a hose depends on its type and manufacturer. If it is dry, cracked, bent, or old, replace it immediately. The hose must be exclusively intended for gas.
